George, I'm a little confused because as far as I know the 440 loader is a quick attach system, infact, I believe the original quick attach loader which then spawned identical systems on the 420,430 and 460 loaders which came out for the 4000 series tractors. If you are using this loader with your buckets, don't they have the quick attach hardware as well?

I thoughly agree. I've looked at those ATV covers by the dozen but never found one that would work for my purpose. A semi fitted cover perhaps with battens inside to arch over non-contact areas like between the rops and the steering wheel to shed snow. Perhaps vented made out of, lets say, Sunbrella material. How am I doing so far?

Steve, you are correct. The lower threaded section on the adj. lift link could be a problem. There is a factory placed roll pin, (I am assuming) by the breakdown in my repair manual, in the end of the male threaded section to keep it from falling apart as you wind down the adjustment to say level a rake. A good thought really as it would be easy to break a foot or just get stuck for hours if an implement landed on you. I'm sure it's happened. The glass hard roll pin would sure mess up those threads if forced out. It was inserted through the grease fitting with the threaded portion screwed all the way down. The guys at JD didn't know how to get it out though and I ended up replacing that part as well. When I got home my repair manual said to line up everything and just tap the assemble on a table. Because my threaded rod was bent badly I had to cut it and then it wasn't long enough to screw down without tack welding a rod to it. The forks were pretty bent so I didn't want to deal with it for $40. My machinist friend could have bored and tapped a hole on the opposing side to drift out the pin but lets face it, I had had enough aggravation and just bought a new one. (those JD manuals are indispensible and lucky for me my tractor came with the complete set.)

If it were me(and I was in your position a year ago), I would never put chains only on the front. According to my dealer's mechanic, do anything to keep the front end from doing all the work that you can do. Therefore, do put sufficient weight in the rear to keep traction on the rear tires and do put chains on the back or else expensive front end repair bills will be forthcoming sooner than later. Also, use that differential lock if you have one. But this was JD and maybe the orange or blue can handle more abuse??? I'd suggest studded ice chains for max. grip. I haven't taken mine off yet and I don't think I will.

This is probably too simple but I'll throw it out there. Mid winter we had a ton of snow and I'd start up my jd1070 to plow out an access road on a building site every week it seemed. I had the same thing happening. After 10 minutes the machine had no power and then finally it would stall out, after which it would start for a couple more minutes. I did the usual filter change and water separater clean out but the problem persisted. I had previously let the fuel run dry one day by mistake and this had thrown me because I thought that this had caused some problem. Finally, I ripped the water separater off and the hose to the fuel tank. The hoses and fittings were clogged with pine needles! I s'pose by letting the tank run dry I had forced the debris (I bought a used rental machine) into the lines but couldn't determine what was happening because some fuel was getting through, just not enough. So if you haven't checked your tank, lines etc.( and your fuel shut off valve). That would be my next step.

Guys, I'm glad the parts are available and the cost was pretty reasonable for once. The JD dealer I prefer to frequent is a small extention store so parts like these must sit for years. Especially, because no one knows their available. Thanks for the numbers. I'm going to copy them down myself for future use.

ThatGuy, start by calling all the small savings banks in your area to gauge if you will be able to live with the terms. In 98 we bought a 38 acre wood lot in southern ME even though we had no equity to speak of. We don't make much money either but have good credit histories. We had no debt. I had spent the previous 3 yrs mostly taking care of my young children and working on the side while my wife worked full time. We drive old cars etc. I spent a solid week on the phone before finding a small local bank who held their loans. We have a fixed 7.25% loan for 25 yrs with 15% down. It was supposed to be a variable rate loan and thus should have gone up a little but the bank paperwork was written incorrectly. I stayed away from building loans because of the time constraints they put on you, usually 9 mths here in the northeast. We currenty have well, septic and foundation in and I'm looking forward to cutting a timberfame this summer from logging that I've done; if spring will ever get here. Good luck

Thanks Kay for the additional information. As soon as the snow melts (only 1 more foot to go) I'll get into it. Thinking about it is always worse(more technical) than the doing. And of course, success combined with the building of an implement or whatever is the fun part.

I sounds like all I would have to do is ocassionally use my forks which are about four feet long and lift them through the pile to mix and incorporate new air channels and pockets. I think this would be easier and less messy than using a bucket to turn over the whole pile. Generally, my forks are alway on anyways. Will this approach work or is it necessary to turn over the whole pile? I have a 100 bales of mulch hay that was protecting a foundation footing this last winter to use up. So, I'm off to a start. That is, if the snow will ever disappear.

I just sold a JD750 4wd with 67 loader 350 hrs for $8500. It was an 1983 I think and a heck of a nice machine for the money. If I had kept it I'm sure it would have lasted a lifetime. Too bad it was to small for my purposes. This is the type of machine you can really count on but no frills like power steering or shift on the fly. And really fixable by any backyard mechanic with a technical manual.

I have new OFA 9mm studded ice chains on my JD1070 40HP MFWD tractor. I only put them on last week but what a difference. Here in S. Maine we've had a lot of snow recently and there's a good 3+ feet on the ground now. I still can't move well through this amount of heavy snow but I've not been stuck either. On ice the grip is pretty good. These chains have a box pattern that doesn't get lost on my new ag treads. The studs are two to a link and go both horizontal and vertical on the box pattern. It took me a number of hours to cut them down to length as they come for a range of sizes. Also, smaller compact tires may be too small for a good fit. The "12S7" fits 11.2x20 up to 13.6/12x38 tires. This is the smallest size they carry. The Finnish boron steel is supposed to wear better than domestic steels. This could be hype, I don't really know, but I am very satisfied with the design. They come complete with mounting and tightening hardware although I did need a couple of additional shackles. You will also need a cutting torch or die grinder to cut the case hardened links for shortening. A catalog can be ordered from Labonville 1-800-764-9969 . Harold, It's been a number of weeks since my last post on this problem. I haven't been using the 1070 very hard but only to clean up a building site and rake the chewed up areas left by trucks before the ruts freeze hard. The cold weather has brought with it less problematic shifting but range shifting is never what I would call smooth, especially going into low. It's odd that a new machine would act the same way. Perhaps my tractor has alway been that way as well while changing ranges. As far as the gear shifting goes, It has smoothed out a little but is not as smooth as when I purchased it. My dealer told me to adjust the clutch a little more and so I will. Good luck.

I don't know the answer to your question but I bought a used 97 1070 4WD this last June for $13,500. with a hard 250 hours. It had hyd hookups for a loader and foam filled turfs. My comparison was the new 990 which doesn't have sync gears or draft control.

Last spring I purchased a 430 loader for my 1070. Originally it had a 440 loader on it with a previous owner and so I had all the hyd. hookups already. The 430 is the new equiv. to the 440. I wanted to put a 460 on it for the lift capacity, however, everyone including the JD mfg. home office advised against it. The best things about the 430 or 440 as opposed to the older models are the quick attach mount on the front and in my opinion, the new linkage for the bucket roll which gives increased movement. When you have a bucket full of sand and want to lower it enough to shovel it out by hand without dumping it all over the ground this feature makes sense. You will need special front and side brackets for the 430 on a 1070 because they have changed the configuration with the new 4000 line. The stock grill protector won't fit from the 430 so you may also need to order one that attaches to the loader frame instead of the one which attaches to the 4000 series tractor front end. Klay, yes the fork attachment I have is a JD unit. I want to build a snow plow unit for my 430 and am wondering if there's anywhere to buy just the attachment parts to weld on to a plow I already have for quick attachment. Actually, I'd rather attach a plow right to the front frame without the loader on but can't figure out how to go about it.

John, a grill guard is worth the expense if your in the woods. It does't take long to dent the heck out of an otherwise perfect front end. I have been clearing trees and logging too. Since you are working in one large area you might be able to get away with a fork attachment to move stumpage around but I suspect you'd be better off starting simple. Buy an extra draw bar for your rockshaft. On it, secure a pair of logging tongs using a large c-ring as close as possible or connect a chain hook directly to the bar. If you go the chain route purchase a 5 ft choker chain with a slip type hook. This will grab your log better then a regular link grabbing chain hook. Your tractor supply will have everything but the tongs probably. I like the tongs because they are so easy to use and if the log hangs up, they will usually slip off. I used to use the tongs a lot before I had a fork attachment. I had a chain hook welded to my bucket and would lift logs out of snags with my FEL. When I used a small 20 HP tractor I would back up to the log (small end if possible). Drop the rockshaft. Get off the tractor and drop on the tongs. Get back on the machine and lift the log and skid in low gear to a place to be stacked. This happens pretty fast but it's important to only fell a few trees at once or you'll have a tangled mess. Keep brush in line by piling it up with branches going in the same direction or else it takes up to much space. If you are going to chip it, this will save you considerable time and energy in the long run.

I agree that the locking pin should be removed. On my compact, If I press the release too hard it goes past and will continue to lock. I simply pull on it while pressing the release. Sometimes it takes a few tries. One last thought. If simple tension won't work, tension plus a few raps with a hammer might. Especially if you don't have a straight on pull. This is probably obvious but I thought I'd mention it.

I have a Mott brand 48" finish flail mower.(They actually call it a hammer knife mower but I guess it is the same thing.) Anyways, I bought it for my JD750 but recently bought a 1070 and will probably sell it to purchase a mower for the larger width machine. I don't know the value but would be willing to talk. It is pto driven and is a heavy duty unit. I'm in New England. Eric
